Eaton Manor Dark Skies

On  Saturday 6th July 2019 the Shropshire Astronomical Society are organising an Eaton Manor Dark Skies event. The event starts at 3pm and there is an entry fee of £2.

Eaton Manor Dark Skies will have Space related activities including Meteor, Solar and Stellar observing. There will be a Telescope clinic, so don’t forget to bring along your telescope, Planetarium tours of the night sky and presentations and talks.

Eaton Manor has some of the Darkest Skies in South Shropshire so is perfect for this event. It is at Eaton under Heywood along the northern edge Wenlock Edge not far from Church Stretton.

This Eaton Manor Dark Skies event is open to all who have enquiring minds, young and older. There are facilities for the disabled.

Solarsphere 2019

Ever heard of Solarsphere?

No. If you already like star gazing or want to start star gazing, then this is the event for you. Solarsphere has talks and workshops on all aspects of the Cosmos.

Solarsphere is on the 9th to the 12th August 2019 near Builth Wells, in beautiful Welsh countryside.

Solarsphere will educate the curious and the beginner and tweak the knowledge of the more experienced amateur while relaxing by your tent.

Solarsphere has lots of workshops, Night Sky Observing , Solar Observing, Binocular Workshop and many more.

The speakers at Solarsphere over the weekend include Stuart Atkinson who will be talking about the Mars Rovers and there are more subjects that I don’t understand.

Friday Night is Sci Fi Party Night, fancy dress costumes are optional with small prizes for the best adult and child. Live music from the Fireside Family, Alien Stash Tin, Citizen Zen and many more over the weekend.

There is camping with loos and showers available. There is a bar, with real ales, and food concessions on site.

Solarsphere is £50 for the weekend, wow!

Solarsphere is a small independently run, non profit making Star Camp.

Shrewsbury Flower Show 2019

Shrewsbury Flower Show is on the 9th and 10th August 2019.

The Quarry becomes the bustling centre of Shrewsbury for these two days with the Shrewsbury Flower Show taking centre stage.

You do not need to be interested in flowers to find something to do at Shrewsbury Flower Show.

There is something for all the family.

There are cooking demonstrations, show jumping, live music, craft marquees, trade stands and lots of flowers.

Saturday evening Scouting for Girls will provide live music.

Both Friday and Saturday evening will finish with a fireworks display.

Tickets are £25 advance per adult or £28 on the gate, there are concessions.

Walking Festivals and Challenges 2019

Shropshire is a great area for walking in and for those of you who enjoy organised events I have put together a list of some of our local walking festivals. I will give a quick summary and let you research further.

Bishops Castle Ramble, Scramble, Amble, May 11th 2019. Three walks from Bishops Castle or to bishop castle for the amble. Raising money for Bloodwise.

Bishops Castle Walking Festival 15th May until 19th May 2019 . This is the 21st Walking Festival in Bishops Castle.

The 17th Clun Valley Challenge is on 18th May 2019. There is a 26 mile or 16mile walk with a 4300 ft ascent. Entry is £22.

Church Stretton Walking Festival is from the 20th June until June 23rd 2019. Lots if different walks including a Stars in Your Skies Walk, a Photography Walk and a Nordic Walking event. The Mynd Drover is the long walk.

Bishops Castle Challenge Walk is in Saturday 3rd August 2019. This is a 24 mile walk with a 4000 ft ascent. There are 13 mile and 11mile options available. £20 entry fee which includes refreshments and certificate.

The Tusker Colour Run at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms is on the 17th August 2019. Book via the Centres Website www.shropshirehillsdiscoverycentre.co.uk. There is a 3.5km route which you can jog, run or walk along which are paint stations from where the participants get covered  in paint. Entrances fees are from £15 per adult.

Cardio Carlos 5km Fun Run is on Bank Holiday Monday 26th August 2019.  The race starts at 9.30am from the Aston on Clun Village Hall where there is also parking and is organised by the Kangeroo Inn. Entry fee is £15 pre 15th August, £20 after. All proceeds will go to CRY (Cardio Risk in the Young). Visit their Facebook page (Cardio Carlos 5k).

Tour des Marches formally the Wistanstow Challenge is on 14th September 2019. It is 26miles long with a mass start at 8.30am. Fee from £10 which include a light breakfast from 7.15, hit food at the finish and Beer.

Much Wenlock Walking Weekend is on August 30th until September 2nd 2019. There are walks for different abilities. Keep checking their Web site.

I hope there is something to inspire you. I like the look of a couple of the Church Stretton walks, so I may see you out there.

Bishops Castle Festivals 2019

Here are some interesting festivals and events happening in Bishops Castle through the coming year. They love to organise a procession.

Bishops Castle Walking Festival is on from 15th until 19th May 2019. This is the 21st annual Walking Festival.

Bishops Castle Summer Rejoicing is on 23rd June 2019. Starts with a service at St John’s Parish Church followed by a Rush Cart Parade with Morris Teams and Dancing, ending up at the Three Tuns Yard.

Bishops Castle Carnival is in 7th July 2019 from noon. There will be a parade of steam engines, vintage cars and floats around town, followed by fun, games and music on Bishops Castle Playing Fields.

Bishops Castle Party in the Park on Saturday 20th July 2019 starting at noon until late. One day music event, show casing local talent in a relaxed atmosphere with food beer and other entertainment.

Michaelmas Fair is on 21st September 2019 from noon. There is a procession of of steam engines and vintage vehicles and lantern parade in the evening. There will street performances, stalls, work shops and live music.

Bishops Castle Christmas Cracker is on Saturday 7th December 2019. There will be late night shopping, more processions, music, a Santa’s Grotto and fireworks.

I have to say Bishops Castle is Buzzing.

Local Cycling events 2019

Here are some local cycling events with a quick summary of each. You will need to research further for more details.

Bishops Castle Tandem Triathlon Logo

Bishops Castle Tandem Triathlon Saturday July 6th 2019. A fun inclusive event, dressing up is encouraged, as is partaking of local hoteliers.

Arts Alive Charity Cycle Challenge starts at Clun on the 7th July 2019. The Tour D’Arts Alive has a variety of routes and you receive an edible medal at the finish. Arts Alive organise lots of local events including supporting Flicks in the Sticks.

Ludlow Cycling Festival is on the 22nd September 2019. It includes the South Shropshire Tors 30/60/100. There is a Family Ride of 11km and an Intermediate Led Group Ride of 30km. Lots more going on at Ludlow  Rugby Club. This event raises money for Macmillam Cancer Support.
