Last year when I walked Dillie I often did a butterfly count. As the Onny Meadows falls into two different quadrants I had to write down the butterflies I saw during the Summer, when more are on the wing. If I was lucky I would see Ian the ranger when I finished and could pass the lists on to him straight away.
Small White and Large White the caterpillars of these butterflies are the ones that like munching brassicas.
Essex Skipper has black tips to it’s antenna which the Small Skipper lacks.
Comma butterflies have cut away wings.
Red Admiral butterflies will be seen feeding on Autumnal fruits such as Apple, plums and greengage.
Small Tortoiseshell one of the first butterflies to be seen in Spring.
Peacock is often seen on buddleia.
Orange tip butterflies have orange tips to their wings, the females have no orange on them.
Speckled Wood are a deep brown with pale yellow spots.
Holly Blue is the first blue butterfly you will see out and about each year.
Painted Lady butterflies do not usually breed in Britain.
Ringlet butterfly prefers the nectar of bramble flowers and privet.
Meadow Brown can be seen out and about even on full days.
Gatekeeper is named because it was usually seen in gateways.
No Small Copper I have not seen one for a couple of years.
And an unidentified white Butterfly.
