Dragonflies and Damselflies on Onny Meadows

Ian the ranger has done a lot over the last year to record what wildlife is on Onny Meadows. One of his areas of expertise are Dragonfies and Damselflies.

I know a couple but I am not very good at identifying most of them so Ian has provided me with a list of what was seen during 2021.

Damselflies

Large Red Damselfly

Common Blue

Azure Blue

Blue-Tailed

Banded Demoiselle

Beautiful Demoiselle

Small Red-Eyed Damselfly

Dragonflies

Broad Bodied Chaser

Common Darter

Black-Tailed Skimmer

Southern Hawker

Brown Hawker

Migrant Hawker

Common Hawker

The Small Red-Eyed Damselfly has only been seen on five other sites in Shropshire. The Red Eyed Damselfly was expected to be seen but wasn’t.

The Common Hawked Dragonfly is usually seen where there are acidic ponds so it was unusual to see on Onny Meadows.

The Ruddy Darter should have seen and has been in the past.

Dragonflies can be seen zipping back and forth over the Meadows during the height of Summer.

I love looking for the Beautiful Demoiselle and Banded Demoiselle along the banks of the Onny River  in summer. It is unusual see them in the same area as they have different requirements so it is a real treat to see both of them on the same site.
