Signs of Autumn 2022

One of my favourite signs of Autumn when I lived in Suffolk was seeing flocks of geese flying over our house each morning and evening.

We do occasionally see geese in Shropshire but not in the large flocks we were used to seeing in Suffolk.

Yesterday I heard the Whooff, whooff, whooff of the wings of two swans, flying over our house, who reside for a few weeks each year on the ponds at Onny Meadows. They are just as spectacular as the geese and I love seeing them.

Another first for this Autumn was hearing tapping, tap, tap, tap,,tap, tap, tap,, tap, tap, tap. I stopped and followed the sound to find the producer of the sound was the nuthatch, tapping in one spot, trying to get the insect in the bark of field maple tree he was on. As the leaves fall from the trees the nuthatch will become more visible.

These may seem insignificant signs of Autumn but they always make me smile and I think they are wonderful.
