Shropshire Flag

The Shropshire Flag was not something I was aware of.

It was first registered in 2012 with the Flag Institute.

It was a banner for the former Shropshire County Council and had been in existence since 1895.

The leopard faces on the Shropshire Flag are a traditional emblem of Shropshire and can be seen on the fire plaques found on the front of buildings in Shrewsbury. They also appear on Shrewsbury town arms, first recorded in 1623

These leopards are known as ‘loggerheads’.

The blue and yellow of the flag are thought to have been colours that represented Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury.
